First, I should admit that I watched Jirí Trnka’s “Cirkus Hurvínek” on YouTube and it didn’t have subtitles. I could understand some of the dialog since it was close to Russian (one of the foreign languages that I speak). The scene that really sticks in my mind is when the emcee has the boy ride the motorcycle in the metal sphere. I recall that Ryan Gosling’s character in “The Place Beyond the Pines” does that. It’s not any kind of great cartoon, but enjoyable enough, even if you don’t speak the language. I understand that Trnka was known as the Walt Disney of Eastern Europe. I’d say that his works were cleverer than anything from Disney. Worth seeing.I wonder what the title translates to.
